San Francisco State University College of Business Utilizes MBA Survey Research to  Improve MBA and MS in Accountancy Programs

Charlotte, NC, August 16, 2011—The full MBA Lifecycle Survey Suite℠ was recently engaged by San Francisco State University College of Business to help with MBA survey research. The suite of MBA student and alumni assessments, created by Percept Research, empowers the business school to indentify key drivers to academic success and student satisfaction.

Dr. John Dopp, Director Graduate Business Programs at SFSU, shares “In order for us to be able to work with the students better, make the program better and, of course, to be able to market the program, we need more information.”

Each survey in the loyalty business school assessment suite covers a different point in the student lifecycle, enabling SFSU to discover new ways to enhance their program.

The MBA Student Entry Survey evaluates incoming students’ perceptions about marketing and the admissions process. The MBA Student Midterm Survey builds on the entry survey by gauging student satisfaction with program delivery. This enables administrators to adjust the program for students during the remainder of the term.

The MBA Student Exit Survey is the traditional full MBA experience assessment, while the MBA Alumni Survey explores longitudinal business school return on investment from MBA graduates.

Brian Mahoney, Managing Partner of Percept Research shares, “San Francisco State recognizes the need to establish a constant improvement loop by institutionalizing a long-term approach for increasing student satisfaction and improving MBA student outcomes.”

The SFSU College of Business had been gathering data through internal surveys, but felt there were gaps in the results. “There were a lot of holes in our survey knowledge because we didn’t really have the horsepower to go out and accurately survey students,” says Dr. Dopp.

The college will use the results to improve the program and create a database of information. That’s why Dr. Dopp chose to invest in all four MBA Lifecycle surveys. “If you really are going to do this, then you have to do all four in order to get any kind of database. You might as well see the whole picture.”

This business school market research will allow SFSU to hear from participants during each phase of the student lifecycle. The school will learn about incoming students’ expectations, measure their satisfaction and gauge MBA learning outcomes after they’ve graduated. It also demonstrates to the students that the business school is listening.

Dr, Dopp says, “Conducting professional surveys, and so on, helps a whole lot in giving them the feeling that we are not only paying attention, but also that we will then use this information to make changes.”

San Francisco State University College of Business is planning to implement all four of the student assessment surveys in the 2011-2012 school year.
